Papiss Demba Cisse came off the bench to score a brace as Newcastle defeated Chelsea 2-1 at St. James' Park yet again to end the Blues unbeaten start to the Season.
Jose Mourinho came into the match looking for his first ever win at the home of the toons and with the blues unbeaten so far this season and Newcastle with only one win in their last three, few would have bet against the blues going away with a comfortable victory.
But it was anything but...
Chelsea started the game the brighter of the two teams with Eden Hazard and Oscar causing mayhem in the defence. Willian twice put shots from the edge of the area just wide of Rob Elliot’s post, while Gary Cahill headed over from a Cesc Fabregas corner. Newcastle however came to life around the half hour mark, Ayoze Perez played in Jack Colback with a delightful little reverse pass, only for Thibaut Courtois to charge off his line and pull off a fine save.
Newcastle goalkeeper Elliot picked up an injury when making a clearance just before the interval and had to be replaced by Jak Alnwick. Chelsea resumed the 2nd half as they started the first, patient build up play trying to find spaces in the Newcastle defence but the Centre halfs Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor continued to look solid. Newcastle Boss Alan Pardew brought on Papiss Demba Cisse for the ineffective Remy Cabella and his impact was almost immediate....
Moussa Sissoko made inroads down the left before setting up Sammy Ameobi for a low cross which Cahill failed to cut out at the near post, allowing Cisse to turn the ball into the net from close range. Chelsea began to dominate possession but Newcastle defended valiantly, led by captain Fabricio Coloccini, who brilliantly blocked a Diego Costa shot. Chelsea continued pressing but after hitting the bar the succeeding counter attack from Newcastle saw them double their advantage....
The hosts worked it neatly in the middle of the park, allowing Colback to play Sissoko in on goal and, although the midfielder got his legs in a mess and seemed to have squandered the chance, he poked the ball across to Cisse, who calmly fired into the empty net. There was late drama as Steven Taylor was sent off on the 81st minute with a very reckless challenge and from the resulting Set piece Fabregas put Drogba in to tap in the finish past the on rushing Alnwick.
Chelsea continued to pour attack after attack but 10 men Newcastle held strong to inflict a first defeat of the season for the high flying blues who were looking to emulate Arsenal's invincibles by going the entire season unbeaten.
