Suspected Boko Haram fighters killed 48 fish merchants in the wake of setting up a detour close to Nigeria's border with Chad, the leader of fish traders associations said Sunday, in the most recent roughness to hit the nation's unstable northeast.
"Many Boko Haram Members blocked a route connecting Nigeria with Chad Republic on the shores of Lake Chad on Thursday and killed around 48 fish traders as they approach Chad to purchase fish," said Abubakar Gamandi, leader of the fish dealers association.
Mr Gamandi said the assailants set up a blockade at Borno state, and stopped a group of fish sellers around midday, butchering some of them and suffocating others in the lake.
"The Boko Haram shooters cuts the throats of a percentage of the men and tied the hands and legs of the others before tossing them into the lake to drown," said Mr Gamandi, identifying with AFP by phone from Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.
It was misty if the rationale in the grisly assault was burglary or if there were different purposes behind the killings. Boko Haram has now and again focused on occupants apparently randomly in its fight against the Nigerian Government.
